Stockholm is the home for nearly 1 million people. Its history traces back to 13th century. The strategic placement on islets connected the Baltic Sea with Sweden’s inner land. This enabled rapid growth, and Stockholm quickly became an important business and economic midpoint. |
Gamla stan (Old Town) is located in the very center. Here you will find Stockholm Palace and many other buildings with a long history, for example the restaurant Den Gyldene Freden (The Golden Peace) that has been serving food since it opened in 1722. |

Norrmalm (the northern district) and Östermalm (the eastern district) are great areas for shopping. Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) is a large department store and Biblioteksgatan with its surroundings is where high fashion brands are located. Svenskt Tenn on Strandvägen is a famous interior design store with many unique fabrics and furniture.

Stadshuset (the city hall) is located on Kungsholmen (the western district). This is where the annual Nobel Prize Banquet takes place on December 10. |
Stockholm and its surroundings has over 100 museums
(http://www.stockholmmuseums.se/en). The main attraction is the Vasa Museum, displaying the warship Vasa that sank in 1628 and was raised from the seabed in 1961. Skansen is the world’s first open-air museum where you can discover historic buildings, traditional crafts, and Nordic wild animals, including lynx, bear, and moose.

Karolinska Institutet (founded in 1810) is a medical university with two campuses: Solna campus to the north of Stockholm and Flemmingsberg campus to the south of Stockholm. Both campuses have facilities for Karolinska University Hospital. KI has around 2000 PhD students and around 6000 undergraduate students. |
